What does DTF mean?

DTF stands for Direct to Film. The design is printed with pigment inks onto a PET film, an adhesive polyurethane powder is applied, it is cured with heat and then transferred to the garment with a heat press.

How DTF works, step by step

  1. Prepare the design as a PNG with a transparent background, at 300 dpi and actual size.
  2. The DTF printer prints the colors and a layer of white ink on top, mirrored.
  3. Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and the excess is shaken off.
  4. The film is cured in an oven or with heat until the powder melts.
  5. The film is pressed onto the garment with the right temperature, time and pressure.
  6. The film is peeled (cold or hot, depending on the manufacturer) and given a second press to set it.

Which fabrics and products does it work on?

DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, linen, denim, canvas and faux leather. That is why it is the favorite method for colored t-shirts, hoodies, caps, tote bags and uniforms.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Full color with gradients and fine detailsNeeds a printer, powder and oven if you print it yourself
Works on dark and light garmentsSlightly thicker feel than sublimation
No minimum order: profitable from 1 pieceNeeds correct temperature and pressure to last
You can buy printed DTF by the meterInks and film need humidity control

How much does it cost to start with DTF?

There are two paths: buy printed DTF transfers by the meter from a supplier and only need a heat press, or invest in a DTF printer, curing oven and powder shaker. Most small shops start by buying printed transfers and a 15 × 15 in (38 × 38 cm) heat press.

💡 Tip: halftones make the print softer and more breathable and save ink. In Photoshop you can apply them in one click with PRO ACTION by Pipe StudioDLP.

Frequently asked questions

Does DTF wash off?

When pressed with the right temperature, time and pressure, DTF lasts dozens of washes. Recommend washing inside out, in cold water and without hot drying.

Does DTF work on black t-shirts?

Yes. The white ink layer makes colors pop on black and colored garments.

What is the difference between DTF and DTG?

DTG prints directly on the garment and works best on cotton; DTF prints on a film that is then transferred to almost any fabric.
