How does sublimation work?

The design is printed on sublimation paper with special inks. With heat and pressure, the ink turns from solid into gas and penetrates the polyester or the product's coating. When it cools it stays inside the material, so it doesn't peel or crack.

What can you sublimate?

  • Polyester t-shirts and garments (100% or at least 65-70%)
  • Mugs with a sublimation coating
  • Sublimation tumblers
  • Polyester pillows and pillow covers
  • Mouse pads, keychains, tiles, puzzles and aluminum panels

Can you sublimate on cotton or dark fabrics?

Not directly. Sublimation dyes polyester and is transparent: it can't print white. For cotton or dark garments, use DTF, heat transfer vinyl or sublimation vinyl.

Tips for perfect colors

  • Print mirrored so text reads correctly.
  • Tape the paper to avoid ghosting.
  • Use the color profile recommended by your ink supplier.
  • Do a test and write down the recipe that works.

Frequently asked questions

Does sublimation fade?

No. The ink stays inside the material, so it doesn't peel or crack. On garments it can lose some intensity after many hot washes.

Which printer can sublimate?

Ink tank printers converted to sublimation ink, or dedicated sublimation printers. Use it only for sublimation.
